Desires, Calculations, and Making Kinds of People: The Modern University Has Never Been "An Ivory Tower"

On March 10th, the Policy Futures International Webinar Series hosted a gripping presentation on Desires, Calculations, and Making Kinds of People: The Modern University Has Never Been "An Ivory Tower" by Tom Popkewitz.

Popkewitz introduced an exciting discussion on how the sciences have worked materially as “actors” and agential in constructing the apparatus of social life about the potentialities of society and populations that research is to activate. In it, he suggested that the view of the University as an “ivory tower” is impaired by the institutionalization of the social and psychological sciences into the modern science university in the late 19th century.

The discussion was continued and complemented by Professor Kristiina Brunila and Professor Luis Miguel Carvalho. The event was chaired by the program director and Associate Professor, Katja Brøgger from Aarhus University and Hannah Moscovitz.
