On the 24th of February, the Policy Futures International Webinar Series hosted a captivating presentation on Synthetic governance and the role of algorithms/AI in education policy and governance by Sam Sellar.
Drawing from his forthcoming book, Algorithms of education: How datafication and artificial intelligence shape policy, Sellar introduced a discussion on a new synthetic form of educational governance involving (1) human rationalities, values and practices; (2) data analytics solutions developed by the technology industry in partnership with education institutions and governments; and (3) the algorithmic decision-making, including artificial intelligence, that increasingly drives these solutions. Sellar’s presentation took outset on an Australian case study of the education policy unit The Centre. The discussion was continued and complemented by Associate Professor of Education at Deakin University, Radhika Gorur, and Senior Research Fellow and ARC DECRA Fellow at Australian Catholic University, Steven Lewis. The event was introduced and chaired by the program director and Associate Professor Katja Brøgger from Aarhus University.
