On the 9th of October 2024, the Policy Futures International Webinar Series hosted an insightful keynote presentation on ‘Cosmopolitan Nationalism: Articulations in Education Policy’. The five keynote speakers were: Miri Yemini, Professor of Education, Tel Aviv University, Claire Maxwell, Professor of Sociology of Education, University of Copenhagen, Laura Engel, Professor of International Education and International Affairs, George Washington University, Moosung Lee, Professor of Education, University of Canberra, and Ewan Wright, Assistant Professor, Education University of Hong Kong.
In their presentation the keynote speakers introduced cosmopolitan nationalism as an analytical lens to explore concurrent and potentially conflicting pressures within education to promote internationalisation and a global perspective while also seeking to remain locally relevant and contribute to national projects. It discussed the key features of cosmopolitan nationalism, originally developed to study education policy. Additionally, it covered broader applications, extensions, and critiques of cosmopolitan nationalism from articles in a Special Issue in Discourse, set to be published in early 2025. The presentation encouraged audience participation to share views on cosmopolitan nationalism as a concept and explored its potential applications to research.
