PhD defence: Is Technology for Me? Exploring Adolescents’ Gendered Aspirations for Technology Careers

Elisabeth Omand Grønhøj is definding her PhD thesis "Is Technology for Me? Exploring Adolescents’ Gendered Aspirations for Technology Careers" on Thursday 26 February 2026

The PhD dissertation investigates how adolescents aged 14–15 develop gendered aspirations for technology careers and how they perceive IT professionals. Combining large-scale international survey data (ICILS 2018), a national Danish questionnaire (ICILS 2023), descriptive drawings, and a systematic review of prior studies, the thesis examines the psychological, social, and cultural mechanisms that shape young people’s engagement with technology. It shows that gender gaps stem mainly from differences in interest, values, and parental influence rather than ability or personal stereotypes. While adolescents are aware of cultural stereotypes about IT professionals, most personally view them positively; however, these perceptions do not strongly predict aspirations. The thesis highlights the need for broader cultural and structural change to ensure equal opportunities in technology.
