Literacy and basic education programmes in Mexico often deal with diverse population groups; however, the contents, methods, expected outcomes and forms of evaluation are usually the same for all learners regardless of their background, social conditions and age groups. The “illiterate” or those with “education deficits” are seen as a homogeneous group. This situation has led to a lack of relevance and engagement of young people in learning programmes. This seminar addresses the possibility of empowering the most disenfranchised youth via relevant learning programmes by looking at a case study.
