CHEF/HEPP talk: From Academic Knowledge to Action: How Can We Support Students as Change Makers?
Climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality, and other complex societal challenges highlight a core pedagogical question: How can academic knowledge be connected to opportunities connected to opportunities to contribute to change?
This is the starting point for Fearless Education – a pedagogical orientation concerned with strengthening students’ opportunities to experience how their academic knowledge can be used to explore challenges, develop ideas and take action.
In this presentation, Emma Lynge Lyngbye Dulic will introduce Fearless Education and show how this pedagogical orientation has been put into practice through Fearless Change Makers – a workshop format accompanied by a manual and a set of project tools. The workshop format supports students in moving from ideas and visions towards concrete change projects, while making the pedagogical purpose of each phase explicit to both students and facilitators.
This approach responds to a central challenge in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): how to bring together the knowledge, skills, values and agency students need to contribute to sustainable development.
The presentation provides a starting point for a broader conversation about teaching in higher education: How can we support student agency without knowing the outcome in advance? How can we create space for experimentation and action? And what conditions enable students to use their academic knowledge to participate in shaping the world they are part of?
