CHEF/HEPP talk

In recent years, university policy and practice have been profoundly affected by a turnaround. We might say that the university has undergone changes from a civil, to a competition (market-based), to a security-like social contract. The new ideal is responsiveness, or response-ability, to challenges and problems defined by actors outside the university, rather than by curricular and disciplinary traditions and scholars themselves. Often, what needs the responses is problems from a future presented to us as probabilistic forecasts - what might go wrong if we do not respond in the present. Universities are expected to actively take in new challenges on both local and global scales; establish partnerships, contribute specific solutions, stimulate cultural and economic growth (as security), and respond to what is happening. Needless to say, universities and scholars have always responded to the world but the modes have changed. The turnaround affects all scales, from how educational programs respond to future needs to how policy leadership strategizes department research profiles.

At this HEPP meeting, we will discuss ”the outside-in university” and the different ways it impacts university policy and practice at the moment. We have invited three brief presentations of 10-15 min, which will be followed by a joint conversation.
