Design and Redesign of an In-service Course

Ph.d.-forsvar ved cand.pæd. Lisser Rye Ejersbo, d. 6. december kl. 13.00 - 16.00

The dissertation by Lisser Rye Ejersbo concerns an in-service course about teaching mathematics through open problem-solving. This issue has become a major concern in Danish education as well as in other countries. For such a course to succeed, it has turned out that the teachers need to master, beside mathematical skills, also the skills of communication and reflection. Developing these skills, in turn, requires the teachers to work on their self-awareness.

The dissertation also addresses the question of how to evaluate the effect of, and improve, the in-service course. This part includes empirical examination of both mathematics classrooms and the in-service course. The evaluation of the course, together with design-research methodology, is used to carry out several re-designs of the course.
