Michael May, professor, Hochschule Rhein Main, Wiesbaden

Honorary professor at DPU, Aarhus University from 1 September 2020.

My name is Michael May. I studied educational sciences at the Goethe University Frankfurt with a focus on social work as well as adult and non-formal youth education with the subject philosophy. There I also received my doctorate in educational science and finally my habilitation. At the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, I have a professorship for theory and methods of social work with a special focus on community work.

I lead our master’s degree in social work with a focus on social space development and organization and coordinate the profile-building research focus of our university, professionalism of social work. I am also in the board and speaker of the Hessian Doctoral Center for Social Work.

My research projects deal primarily with the question how professional social work can give subaltern groups the opportunity to represent themselves in society with their own voice. I am currently leading a research network funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research on recovery conducive alliances between professionals in the field of community psychiatry and people who have been diagnosed as chronically mentally ill.
