Robert Rosenberger, Georgia Tech

Robert Rosenberger from Georgia Tech. is visiting Future Technology, Culture and Learning at DPU May - July.

AU's research Foundation AUFF is financing a 3-months stay by Dr. Robert Rosenberger, Georgia Institute of Technology, this summer.

Publications
Rosenberger and members of FTCL will be working on a collective anthology to be published in Postphenomenology & the Philosophy of Technology by Lexington Books/Rowman Littlefield Press.

Lectures and seminars
During his stay, Rosenberger will give at least one public lecture together with Dr. Anežka Kuzmičová from Stockholm University. Date to be announced.

In May and June the programme will host 4 seminars on different themes within post-phenomenology:

May 9, 14.00-16.00: Roots & Entanglements
This will serve as an introduction to postphenomenological and cultural historical thinking. We will review some of the key concepts and figures from the philosophical tradition of phenomenology and cultural historical
theory, and consider the connections and divergences of the contemporary school of thought called "postphenomenology" and cultural historical theory. After covering many of the main ideas of
postphenomenology, we will explore some of the connections that have been made between these theories and others, and which new connections might be possible.

May 23, 14.00-16.00: Mediation & Multistability
The notion of "mediation" is central to many theories of technology across many disciplines, from anthropology, to the philosophy of technology, to Science & Technology Studies. We will explore  postphenomenology's conception of technological mediation, and its implications for how we should think about subjects, artifacts, and the objective world. Central to this discussion will be the postphenomenological notion of "multistability," i.e., the understanding that technologies can have different purposes and meanings for different users in different contexts. The cultural historical concept of mediation will be discussed in relation to multistability.

June 6, 14.00-16.00: The Antonym of the Virtual
Here we explore the notion of the "virtual." We consider the possibility that its antonym may be something other than the "real." In its place we will need to develop a conception of technological embodiment, one that takes seriously the materiality of technology and the deep description of user experience.

June 20, 14.00-16.00: Activity & Potentiality
At our final session, we will bring together our discussions on postphenomenology to explore its potential connections with activity theory and cultural and historical theory. This will involve discussion into our conceptions of artifacts, collectives, and perception, and will include a cross analysis ideas from the field of Science & Technology Studies.

Profile

Robert Rosenberger is an assistant professor in the School of Public Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Working in the philosophy of technology and philosophy of science, his approach involves refining philosophical ideas through their application to scientific research, technology design, and policy.

Rosenberger is also associated with the Philosophy program and the School of Public Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
A central focus of his research is the analysis of the ways technologies are wrapped up in contexts of conceptualization, use, and bodily habit. These studies include investigations into the experience of everyday devices (e.g. cellular phones, automobiles), and reflection on problems that accompany their use (e.g. the drop in driving proficiency that occurs as one talks on the phone).

One ongoing branch of these studies involves the analysis of the roles imaging technologies play in scientific research, and the implications for specific contemporary debates in fields such as space science and neurobiology.
