The 20th century saw a marked democratisation of the idea of "the university". Although linked in part to changes in the nature of knowledge, technology and the economy, this was also deeply influenced by social movements, particularly those emerging from capitalist industrialism. The democratisation of the idea of the university took different forms in different countries, reflecting the specific political, social, cultural and economic configurations, but the notion that higher education should be available as a public good was widespread. In the early years of the 21st century, this idea is under attack, particularly from forces of neoliberal globalisation which see it as both unsustainable and damaging to economic advance: much of this attack is represented in the strategy of unbundling. Drawing mainly on British contributions, this lecture will explore and reassess the work of key 20th century thinkers on the university and its public role, outline and evaluate some 21st century critics, and discuss their implications.
Admission to the lecture is free.
