Basil Bernstein (1924 – 2000), who held the Karl Mannheim Chair of the Sociology of Education, at the Institute of Education, University of London, has influenced a wide range of scholars within the field of educational sociology, as well as related fields. His analysis of language, social group and cultural reproduction has inspired researchers who investigate curriculum, social inequality and types of knowledge.

In the lecture, Professor Peter Kelly will present his views on the educational sociology of Basil Bernstein, and present an overview of how he sees the development of Bernstein’s ideas in contemporary research; as well as demonstrate how his own work has been influenced by Bernstein.

Peter Kelly is associate Professor (Reader) in Comparative Education at Plymouth Institute of Education (Faculty of Arts & Humanities). He has been working on a comparative pedagogy project, Comparing and Analyzing Teaching in Northern Europe (CATE), which looks at lower secondary language/literature and mathematics teaching in Denmark and England.
