Aalto University was set up as a flagship project to make Finnish higher education ‘World Class’. It employs academic staff on a US-style tenure system with purportedly transparent and objective criteria for excellence – like numbers of publications in A-level journals and research exchange with foreign universities. This system is meant to attract the most talented national/international scholars and make Aalto Internationally competitive.

Using Dorothy Smith’s approach to Institutional Ethnography, Rebecca Lund will show, from the standpoint of junior female scholars, how this system shapes academic lives, and reproduces gendered discourses of excellence and academic hierarchies.
