Ethnographic researchers have long grappled with issues of belonging via notions such as access, insider/outsider status, credibility and relationships. Many of these ignore the histories of colonisation – not only of places but of ideas and ways of thinking. In this presentation, I draw on the notion of coloniality to examine how the very ways we understand and practice access, ethics and belonging in research settings are colonised by western research norms. I reflect on my own positioning as a white settler academic working with indigenous colleagues on a funded research project on indigenous health. I take the stance that my starting place as an ethnographer should be to examine how coloniality flows through my thinking and approach to research and then troubling those assumptions and practices. One example is the right to research. I suggest we instead begin by assuming we do not have the right to do ethnographic research in any given site, and then walk backwards to explore the possibilities through deep reflexive collaboration.

Our Ethnography Zoom Sessions aim at facilitating dialogue, particularly concerning methodological innovation, ethnographic research ethics, and ethnographic insights into different fields of education. Participating in a zoom session, you will meet an educational ethnographer presenting their current work. You will have an opportunity to discuss with fellow ethnographers after the presentation and get into dialogue with the presenter.
