Abstract:

How can we help students to better understand complex global challenges while at the same time imagining alternative responses to them?  I propose that one way of achieving this is to combine critique with creativity in our teaching. While students’ critical understanding of the complexities of global challenges and the limitations of many mainstream responses to them are fundamental to HE teaching, it is equally important to enable students to move beyond deconstruction towards putting together again, in radically new ways. In my talk, I will outline my critical-creative pedagogy and show how it can be applied to enable students to begin reclaiming economies, repairing ecologies and prefiguring alternative futures in their learning. I will also present a number of teaching activities from my own pedagogical practice and how these could be adapted to different contexts.
