The lecture describes the history of educational policy and other public policies affecting the field of adult education in the Czech Republic since the country’s independence in 1993. Vocationalism is presented as the main trend in the field. Policy making takes place at multiple levels of government. The policy vocabularies, priorities and main procedures in place are primarily shaped by the European Union’s mainstream, and are also clearly influenced by the OECD. No matter which administration in power, government policies have been unsystematic and selective. The overall policy relevance of adult education has been importantly shaped by EU funding; and Europeanisation is also responsible for some achievements in the standardization adult education.
