Abstract

To teach we must teach something, and we must recognise what we seek to do and why. In Confucian texts it is self-cultivation, in European texts it has its roots in perfection. If we fail to understand that, we are as enjoined in Tolstoy’s dilemma of, “in reality I was still confronted with the same insoluble problems of how to teach without knowing what I was teaching” (1987:23).

I address these issues, adopting a unicity of reality developed by Dun Scotus in the late Middle Ages and evident in Spinoza and, much more recently, in Deleuze who suggests that there “has only ever been one ontology, that of Duns Scotus. Which gave being a single voice” (2014:45).
